Jaundice
We generally know a lot about good health, but when we have a problem, it seems like - we don't know anything, no matter how small or big the problem is? Then it seems - if only there was a guide in front of us!!
Although it is unbelievable, it is true - even in this
modern era, in some places in the third world, people believe in 'charms and
incantations' when they have jaundice. A few days ago, while visiting a village,
I saw this. They are not willing to accept that, - it is not a matter of
'charms and incantations'!
I forced them to the doctor. I heard that the child
has recovered now.
The doctor said - Jaundice means inflammation of the
liver. It is not a disease in itself, it is a symptom of the disease. Hepatitis
A, B, C, D, and E are viruses that cause inflammation in the liver, which is
called viral hepatitis.
These hepatitis viruses are the main cause of jaundice
all over the world. However, in some people in the developed world, excessive
alcohol consumption is one of the causes of this jaundice.
Apart from this, autoimmune liver disease, side
effects of medicines, hereditary factors, thalassemia and hemoglobin E disease,
all diseases that cause blood breakdown, or stones or tumors in the bile ducts
and cancer in the liver or elsewhere can cause jaundice. Therefore, it is not
right to think that jaundice means liver disease.
Our food is processed in the liver. At some point, the
red blood cells naturally break down and produce bilirubin, which is later
processed in the liver and enters the digestive system through the bile ducts
with the bile. Bilirubin from the intestines exits the body through the feces.
If there is any abnormality in this long cycle of
bilirubin, bilirubin increases in the blood - that is when jaundice occurs.
Nothing should be done in jaundice without consulting a doctor.
As
for food advice for jaundice, the doctor said -
There are many misconceptions among many people about
what the diet and treatment of a patient with jaundice should be, which have no
basis. One should eat such food that does not put any pressure on the liver or
gallbladder. Eating the right food little by little and taking full rest will
cure jaundice. Healthy food is necessary to prevent jaundice.
1. Whole grains: Brown rice, bread, oats
can be eaten to fulfill the carbohydrate requirement. Whole grains contain a
lot of fiber and vitamins, which help in removing harmful toxins.
2. Protein: Fish, chicken, and pulses should be
included in the diet every day. Otherwise, the patient will become weak. Many
people think that patients with jaundice cannot eat fish and meat. This is
actually a misconception.
3. Vegetables: Sweet pumpkin, sweet potato, radish,
beetroot, carrot, tomato, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and spinach are very
good for jaundice patients.
4. Fruits: It is good to include easily digestible
fruits like berries, papaya, watermelon, pineapple, ripe mango, banana, orange,
olive, avocado, and grapes in the daily diet.
5. Dairy foods: It is not good to eat full cream milk
or yogurt, cheese if you have jaundice. It is high in saturated fat, which is
harmful to the liver.
6. Antioxidant rich foods: Lemon juice is very good
for jaundice patients. These fulfill the body's water needs as well as increase
immunity. Apart from this, it is good to eat a small amount of nuts every day.
It is good to eat a little ginger or garlic, ginger juice or ginger tea once or
twice a day. These are good for the liver.
7. Water: You should drink enough water every day (at
least eight glasses daily). However, there is no need to drink extra water. We
all know that water removes harmful toxins from the body. Sugarcane juice,
coconut water also fulfill the body's water needs. However, you should eat
homemade juice instead of sugarcane juice on the side of the road.
8. Sugar or excess sweet foods, raw salt, excess
oil-spiced foods, red meat (beef, buffalo, goat meat), alcohol, trans fat and
saturated fat foods should not be consumed.
Newborns
also get jaundice -
Jaundice doesn't just happen to adults, newborns also
get jaundice, and a baby's health problem is a matter of concern for the entire
family!
The doctor said - Jaundice affects about 60 percent of
full-term newborns and about 80 percent of premature babies.
Normal or physiological jaundice: This jaundice begins
to manifest itself when the baby's face and eyes turn yellow two or three days
after birth. It gets better within 10 to 14 days without any complications or
treatment.
However, if jaundice appears on the first day of
birth, or does not get better within two weeks or continues to increase, or if
the newborn's body suddenly turns very yellow for no apparent reason, then
there is a reason for concern. In this case, if treatment is not taken on time,
there is a risk of long-term brain problems and mental retardation.
As
for the cause of jaundice on the first day of birth, the doctor says -
1, In most cases, the mismatch between the blood
groups of the mother and the newborn is the main cause of severe jaundice on
the first day of birth. This can happen if the mother's blood group is negative
(A, B or O negative) and the baby's group is positive, or if the mother's group
is O positive and the baby's group is A or B positive. In this case, the baby
needs to be hospitalized and treated.
2. If blood accumulates due to an injury somewhere in
the body, such as in the case of normal delivery, blood sometimes accumulates
under the scalp.
3. Many times, there is no apparent reason for
excessive jaundice.
Doctors
say that the causes of dangerous jaundice in babies are -
1. This can happen if the baby has a congenital defect
in the liver or gallbladder. In this case, the color of the newborn's stool is
often completely white instead of yellow.
2. If the newborn has a congenital deficiency of
thyroid hormone.
Doctor's
advice on what to do in case of normal jaundice -
1. A child suffering from normal or physiological
jaundice should also be fed only breast milk. Tinned milk should not be given
under any circumstances. Because, it will make the baby's stool hard and
jaundice will take time to subside.
2. You should keep an eye on whether the yellowness of
the baby's body is increasing day by day.
3. You should get a thyroid hormone test done at the
age of five days after birth and seek medical advice.
4. Other ancillary care of the child should be
ensured.
To
lead a healthy life with your child - you should be
aware.
