Diabetes
I have understood through the pain of life - to have a healthy life despite hundreds of problems, you have to know.
My parents did not have diabetes and although I knew
the name of diabetes, I did not know the complications or symptoms that caused
it, so when I got diabetes, I did not understand that so many of my physical
problems were due to diabetes.
Whatever disease I was having - it was taking an
extreme form. When it came to dental problems - it became an extreme situation.
I had to lose three teeth. Not only that, but the gum became an extreme
situation. The problem subsided for a few days with antibiotics, but after a
few months the problem returned.
Similarly, whatever disease I have, it appears more
and more, doctors and medicines are being used, but my physical condition is
getting worse day by day. But I do not understand that this is happening
because of my diabetes.
After the disease was diagnosed, the doctor said -
thank God - even after realizing it so late, there were no major problems like
heart block, increased creatinine in the liver.
It is not the doctor's fault here, when the doctor
asked me about diabetes, I insisted all the time - no, - I do not have
diabetes. It does not run in our family.
Much later, the doctor forced me to get a prescription and after getting all the tests done, it was found that - my blood glucose level was 1.8 below and 33 above.
Everyone's hands on their heads! And everyone is very
angry with me. And I have repeatedly blamed myself for my ignorance!! If the
parents do not have the disease, the child will not have it - no one else will
make this mistake.
The doctor said - Diabetes is a type of metabolic
disorder. There is insulin in the body but it is not working. Or the insulin is
completely destroyed. The function of insulin is to reduce the excess glucose
in the food we eat. When the production of insulin decreases or the insulin
produced cannot work properly, excess glucose accumulates in the body. This
excess glucose is the cause of damage.
Diabetes is generally considered to be of 2 types.
Type-1, and Type-2 diabetes.
Type-1 - is - their insulin is destroyed anyway. They
have to be given insulin from outside. Otherwise they will die.
Type 2 is - for some reason, there is a deficiency in
the effectiveness of insulin and due to this, the glucose that enters the body
through food accumulates. It can be controlled through lifestyle changes and
medication.
If the glucometer shows - the glucose level on an
empty stomach is more than 7 and after eating is more than 11, then it is
understood that diabetes has occurred.
Diabetes increases the level of sugar or glucose in
the body. Glucose is produced from the food we eat. The body gets energy from
this glucose. And insulin is a hormone that controls the metabolism of
carbohydrates and fats in the body. Without insulin, glucose cannot enter the
body's cells, due to which glucose accumulates in the blood vessels, this
excess glucose reduces the body's immunity and that is what is called diabetes
in a person.
Experts say - Nowadays, there are very few people who
do not have diabetes. This disease can be called fatal, and it can also be
called not fatal. If you are aware, it is not fatal, but if you are slightly
unaware, it can become fatal. It can also be called a silent killer.
When
and why to take insulin -
Diabetic patients feel quite uncomfortable and
reluctant to take insulin. However, it is not always necessary to take insulin
in diabetes.
There are specific reasons and instructions for taking
insulin. In most cases, type-2 diabetes can be controlled with lifestyle
changes, i.e. walking, moderate exercise, moderate and nutritionist-directed
diet, and various types of medications. Insulin is needed in some special
patients. It is good to know when the doctor may ask you to take insulin ------
1. Insulin is the safest during pregnancy and while
breastfeeding. Therefore, if a patient with gestational diabetes or a known
diabetic patient wants to become a mother, all medications should be stopped
and insulin should be given.
2. It is very important for diabetic patients to
control their sugar levels before and after any surgery. Not only to accelerate
wound healing, but also to avoid various complications, temporary or long-term
insulin may be required.
3. Insulin is the most reliable and safest for quick
recovery from various serious diseases - such as heart attack, stroke or
serious infections - such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, abscess, gangrene, etc.
4. If someone's diabetes is uncontrolled after using
several or three types of drugs at high doses, it is called oral hypoglycemic
agent failure. This proves that their medicine will no longer work, because
their pancreas is not producing enough insulin. In this case, they will have to
become insulin-dependent.
5. If there are complications of the kidneys and
liver, insulin must be used. In case of jaundice, the medicine may have to be
stopped temporarily and insulin given.
6. Many people are initially diagnosed with very high
blood sugar levels. Blood sugar is more than 16.7 mmol or 300 grams/deciliter
or average sugar HbA1c is 10 percent. If it is more, it must be reduced first
with insulin. In this situation, medicine is not effective. Rather, it can lead
to various complications.
7. If blood sugar suddenly increases a lot, a
life-threatening complication called 'diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar
coma' can occur. If such complications increase, hospitalization is required
and insulin is given through saline.
8. Medicines do not work in type-1 diabetes. They have
to depend on insulin to survive.
# Expert's statement to dispel misconceptions about
insulin -
Due to our various misconceptions, experts say that
insulin is a life-saving drug for diabetic patients. Although various types of
diabetes drugs have been discovered, there is still no alternative to insulin
at various stages. But many people have unreasonable fears and misconceptions
about this insulin. For example -
(2) Does starting insulin mean running the rest of
your life?
(3) Is it better to stop insulin when sick?
Many people stop insulin when they have fever, diarrhea,
or vomiting. This is because when they are sick, they do not eat properly and
their blood sugar levels may drop. However, stopping insulin can cause a sudden
increase in blood sugar levels, which can lead to further complications.
Therefore, if you are sick, you should make a plan to measure your blood
glucose levels regularly as needed. It is necessary to reduce or increase the
insulin dose by measuring glucose or consulting a doctor. Stopping insulin
without taking any precautions is nothing but foolishness.
(4) Do you have to be careful when taking insulin? --
Yes, of course there is a need for caution. When
taking insulin, there is a fear of hypoglycemia, and you have to eat on time
and in the right amount repeatedly. That is why life seems disciplined. But
whether you take insulin or not, a diabetic patient should lead a disciplined
and regular life. Apart from that, with modern insulin, there is no problem if
the meal time is a little different or if you take insulin before or after
eating.
Many insulin users increase their food intake due to
fear of hypo and gain weight. This is also not right. Be careful - if you want to lead
a healthy life.
