"Depression and Sadness" - Differentiate
It is important to know the difference between depression and sadness. Otherwise, just as you can unnecessarily overdo it with a simple 'sadness' - you can get into trouble with unnecessary expenses. Similarly, taking someone's sadness lightly can really lead to big problems. Someone can go through trauma and have a life-destroying incident.
A girl I know got divorced for some reason. A
fresh-spirited girl suddenly became completely quiet, a compassionate girl
changed completely. She was sad all the time. Everyone around her, including
her family, thought - the divorce matter is very stressful, time will heal her
wounds, everything will gradually get better. But the girl got sick and died.
On the other hand, a teenage boy from another family
failed the exam and suffered from depression, but after a few days he got
better again and focused on his studies again with the awareness and
identification of the problem by the guardian.
Psychology says - We can feel down due to any failure.
We get scared when we see someone in the family sitting around feeling down for
a few days. Especially in the current era of competition, many people do not
want to accept any failure easily or many cannot keep up with the competition
equally. Then they can get disoriented for a few days and that can make them
feel down!
The doctor said - feeling upset does not mean
depression. Being down for no reason, losing interest in daily tasks (such as
studying) or doing enjoyable and favorite things (such as singing or reading
books) - are the main symptoms of depression. If these symptoms are present in
someone for at least two weeks, then he can be said to be suffering from
depression. This depression can cause great harm to mental health.
General and temporary sadness does not mean depression.
Sometimes we think of sadness as sadness and get confused, and sometimes we do
not give importance to sadness, thinking of it as a slight sadness. Sadness is
a normal emotion. Anyone can be sad for a day or two for various reasons. But
depression is a long-term feeling of sadness without a reason. It should be
taken seriously as a major mental health problem. Neglect is not right at all.
Experts say - Women are twice as likely to suffer from
depression as men. To live a healthy life, we need to be aware - 'How can we
tell if this is depression and not just a simple sadness?' Our ignorance often
leads to big problems.
Experts say - Common symptoms of depression are
feeling sad most of the day for at least two weeks, not feeling like doing
anything, becoming irritable and suddenly angry.
People suffering from depression do not want to talk
to anyone, and they do not like the activities or entertainment that they used
to enjoy.
Decreased attention, feeling tired, sleep problems -
such as waking up early or not sleeping or sleeping too much, appetite problems
- such as not wanting to eat, not feeling hungry or eating too much, decreased
interest in work, inattention and forgetting simple things, always thinking
about death, feeling guilty, etc. Thinking about suicide, and attempting it are
important symptoms of depression.
Depression can cause some physical symptoms, such as
headaches, discomfort in the head, burning in the head, body, hands and feet,
feeling like something is stuck in the throat, body aches, neck pain, joint
pain, heartburn, chest pain, difficulty breathing, etc.
Experts say - there is a scientific treatment for
depression. You have to be patient. Depression medication takes time to work.
Along with medication, psychotherapy (counseling) plays an important role in
treatment.
A patient with depression should walk regularly every
day, it is beneficial to go to social events, and give yourself time to
continue your hobbies (listening to music, reading books, going for walks,
chatting). The main thing is - you have to try to keep yourself healthy.
Exercise
also plays a special role in reducing depression -
Depression is currently a big problem in our families.
Young people and even teenagers are being affected by this problem. This has a
major negative impact on daily life. Nothing feels good, there is no motivation
to work.
Problems arise in sleeping and eating. If the problem
becomes more complicated, incidents like suicide also occur. Therefore,
treatment of depression is essential. In addition to medication and
psychotherapy as advised by a doctor, exercise is very effective.
Experts say - Stress increases stress hormones in the
body - such as cortisol, adrenaline, etc. As a result, the chest palpitations,
anxiety increases, sweating, fatigue and depression increases. Regular exercise
can control these stress hormones. In addition, studies have shown that regular
exercise increases the release of endorphins in the brain, which creates a
pleasant feeling of joy, eliminates depression. It increases blood circulation
in the brain, and helps change mood. Research says - exercising for 20-40
minutes three days a week reduces depression a lot after 6 weeks.
Expert advice on what kind of exercise is helpful in
removing the clouds in our mind if we want to live a healthy life -
1. First, you should stretch for 5 minutes. Then do 20
minutes of aerobic exercise, then another 5 minutes of cooldown. Regular
exercise in this rhythm will eliminate depression. Jogging, cycling, swimming,
dancing or aerobics - these are effective exercises.
2. Sitting in Padmasana, slowly inhale deeply through
the nose, hold for three seconds. Now slowly exhale through the mouth. Do this
three times in one sitting.
3. Matsyasana is to lie down on your stomach like a
fish. After staying in this position for 20 seconds, you should return to
normal. Do this two to three times a day.
4. Just walking regularly in open green areas every
day is also helpful in reducing depression.
If we want to lead a healthy life, we need to focus on mental problems along with physical ones.
