Ways and rules of care for paralyzed patients
Due to our own ignorance my mother became paralyzed, living between life and death for nine years. I saw her suffering very closely, I got to know a little from it, but how much I could use - I don't know, because she couldn't express anything about her pain-joy-love-feelings.
Even if none of us want
it, due to not knowing and not following the health rules, deadly and painful
health problems like stoke can put us and our families in trouble at any time.
This is why I am saying
that the family is in trouble - many times complications increase due to
ignorance in the service and care of stroke patients. Especially, these
complications can arise due to various reasons including not following the correct
procedure in transferring the patient from one place to another, not
understanding the patient's attitude.
If you follow the advice
of an expert doctor and be aware of these issues, some complications can be
avoided and you can go on in a healthy way. For example –
1. Transfers:
When transferring a stroke patient to wheelchairs, beds, commodes, and when
taking them to the hospital or to the doctor, if proper procedures are not
followed, the patient becomes weaker, uncomfortable and in a lot of pain. Bones
can even dislocate from joints in the body. In this case, according to the
advice of the expert doctor, the correct procedure should be followed and
adequate support should be given to the waist and shoulders.
2. Attitude of the patient:
After suffering a stroke, the patient's mind is not healthy and normal. So can
abnormal behavior and anger. In this case, you should understand the attitude
of the patient without getting upset and follow the advice of the expert
doctor. Giving emotional support to the patient is most important in this case.
3. Drink less water:
It is seen in most of the patients, due to lack of proper amount of water or
liquid food, the color of the patient's urine changes and even infection may
occur. To avoid such complications, the patient must drink enough water. Along
with that, canned water, rice crackers (chira), and husks of isabgul can be
fed.
4. Tossing and turning in
bed: After a stroke, the patient usually has to lie in
bed for a long time. In this case, pressure sores, discomfort, numbness can
occur if stay in one position for a long time. For this, the patient must lie
on the right, left, and side for two hours. When changing the side must be
supported with a pillow, so that the patient rests or sleeps comfortably.
5. Cleanliness:
The patient should be bathed regularly. If bathing is not possible, the whole
body must be wiped with a wet cloth. New diseases can be transmitted from
unsanitary conditions. Olive oil or lotion can be used on hands and feet twice
a day, so that the skin will be good. Shampoo and oil can be used on the head
if needed.
* But in case of brain surgery patients
should follow the advice of expert doctor. In such a situation, water, oil,
shampoo cannot be used for a certain time.
Exercise
is important after stroke – The expert said - When
a stroke occurs, usually the muscles of some part of the body become weak. As a
result, patients lose balance, and find it difficult to manage daily activities
alone. Just as medication as prescribed by a doctor is essential for stroke or
paralysis patients, regular exercise or physiotherapy is also important to
recover from this condition.
In this regard, experts have repeatedly warned that
how much the condition of a paralyzed patient will improve as a result of
exercise depends on several factors. However, the sooner you start
physiotherapy, the more you can get the maximum benefit.
Whether physiotherapy is being given effectively or
not, how weak the patient's muscles are in the initial condition, these things
should be observed. If the patient can gain the ability to do his casual work
through physiotherapy, it is very beneficial. If gradually regain the ability
to do other things (like writing), then that's a matter of luck. But 100%
recovery may not be possible.
For those who are fortunately only mildly affected – some
have crooked faces, difficulty speaking and eating, some cannot fully close
their eyes even during sleep – there are different types of exercises for
different patients. However, it may take a long time to get results from
physiotherapy.
You should know about physiotherapy from the doctor.
Physiotherapy can be done at a physiotherapy center or during a hospital stay,
while home physiotherapy is also available.
Initially, the help of a professional experienced
person is needed, but later the family members should learn and take this
responsibility. A stroke patient's recovery is very slow. So emotional support
is very important. Sometimes it is better not to give physiotherapy immediately
if you have a stroke due to bleeding in the brain, the doctor will tell you
when to start it.
What
happens if you don't exercise? ----
Without physiotherapy, the patient does not regain
much muscle strength. Therefore, due to his inability to do all kinds of work,
he suffers from various mental pains including depression. If the esophagus,
tongue, etc. are affected, the nose should be fed through a tube. This is also
a big risk. If the muscles of the face are weak, the speech becomes slurred. If
can't close your eyes, there is a risk of eye infection.
Again, stroke or
paralysis can cause Bell's palsy in middle-aged to old people. In Bell's palsy,
the face is crooked.
One day you woke up and
saw that one side of your face was crooked. When talking or laughing, the lips
are hanging on one side, one side of the mouth cannot be moved, water is
falling while drinking. This kind of problem is called Bell's palsy ie facial
nerve paralysis. This can be due to neurological problems.
The expert said that this problem should be referred to a doctor as soon as possible. This is because steroid or antiviral treatment is most beneficial if started within 72 hours.
Electro-physiotherapy can control the inflammation of the nerves and muscles and fibers around the mouth. Some simple exercises can be beneficial even at home. These exercises are similar to daily activities. Some such exercises were known from the doctor --
1. Chewing or moving the tongue with something like
chocolate or chewing gum in the mouth.
3. Blowing out candles, drinking water with straws,
blowing up balloons.
4. Swirl a few times in the mouth like rinsing with
lukewarm water.
5. Stand in front of the mirror and say E', O, U. During
this exercise, move the face with the hand on the side of the muscle that is
weak. For example, when saying = o, the snout goes down a little and the two
lips are slightly apart. But since one side of the mouth is ineffective in
Bell's palsy, try to evenly space that side with the hand.
Have to do the right
things even if it's difficult.
